History
The English Setter is believed to have originated from Spain. It is one of the oldest breeds of gundog. It was introduced into Britain around the 13th century where it was used to hunt game which would be then used as food for the table.
The English Setter was first cross-bred with the pointer. Later in the early 19th century the dog was further bred by two English breeders by the names of Edward Laverack and Purcell Llewellin. Two main types were produced, one for show and another for hunting and field trials.
The English Setter as a pet
Today the English Setter is still sometimes used as a working dog. It has a very easy-going temperament and makes an excellent companion. It is also very good with children and other pets. |
