About the Irish Setter

History
The Irish Setter is thought to have been bred with a number of different breeds, including the Spanish Pointer, the Red Irish Spaniel and later the Gordon Setter. The dog was originally used for hunting out game birds such as hawk and quail, and because of its patience and great stamina it became a highly respected gundog.

The Irish Setter, or Red Setter, as it is commonly nicknamed, was introduced into Britain in the late 19th century.

Because of its keen sense of smell today the Irish Setter is sometimes used as a search and rescue dog.
