About the Flat-coated Retriever |
 |
History
This dog is thought to have originated from the Newfoundland. It was originally known as the Wavy-coated Retriever. The Flat-coated Retriever was cross-bred with a number of other sporting dogs including the Labrador, Setter, Spaniel and Sheepdog. Because of its superb stamina and scenting qualities it makes an excellent retriever.
The dog was further developed to produce the now known flat-coated variety and became very popular with gamekeepers and sportsmen until its decline in the 1920s' when it became totally eclipsed by the Labrador and Golden Retriever.
Today the Flat-coated Retriever is still used as a gundog and is greatly respected and considered as one of the best in the world.
