About the Golden Retriever

History
The Golden Retriever is a native of Britain. It was developed in 1868 in Invernesshire by a Scottish landowner called Lord Tweedmouth. The dog is a cross between a Yellow Spaniel and the now extinct Tweed Water Spaniel. It was used as a working dog to retrieve game birds and hares, and was trained to pick up and carry the prey carefully in its mouth without marking it.

Golden Retrievers today are trained and adapted for many tasks, including drug detecting and guide dogs; they are also used to carry out specific tasks for the disabled.

Grooming your Golden Retriever
Grooming requirements: Stripping is required where the coat becomes too thick and heavy using a stripping knife. The hair should be cut from underneath the pads, but not from between the toes. The coat should be brushed thoroughly on a regular basis with a soft brush. Brush the hair only in the direction it lies, then comb all the feathering through from the skin.

Tools required: Slicker, bristle brush, comb and scissors, shedder for removing loose hair.
