About the Labrador Retriever |
 |
History
The Labrador Retriever originated in the early19th century in the Newfoundland. It was originally used as a retriever before it became more commonly used as a gundog. As a retriever it would be trained to jump off fishing boats, take hold of the fishing nets in its mouth and hauling them to waiting men on the shore.
The Labrador Retriever arrived in Britain in the mid 19th century on-board fishing boats bound for Poole harbour.
Because of its soft mouth and natural ability in water the Labrador Retriever became a very popular and valuable gundog to sportsmen who would use it to catch wild-fowl.
This animal is also an impressive sniffer dog and is often used by the Police Force for detecting drugs. Because of its temperament it also makes an impressive guide dog.
The Labrador Retriever as a pet
The Labrador Retriever is a patient and intelligent animal that loves water. It is very dependable and easy to please. It is well suited to a family life and loves children and other pets. It is easy to train and needs plenty of exercise. |
