History
The Spaniel is thought to have originated in Spain, some time around the 14th century. It is known to have been in existence in England and Wales around 1000AD.The dog was originally used to flush out small game.
At the beginning of the 19th century the Spaniel was divided into two separate breeds, the 'Starter' and the. 'Cocker'. The 'Starter' would spring the game and the 'Cocker' would then be used to hunt it down.
The Cocker Spaniel as a pet
Today the Cocker Spaniel has become far more of a household companion than a working dog. It is an intelligent animal, and makes an excellent pet. It is very playful and affectionate and requires lots of exercise as it is prone to boredom. It is not particularly good with children, unless it has been brought up with them from an early age. It is very easy to train. |
