About the English Springer Spaniel |

History
Spaniels have been in existence for approximately 800 years, but it wasn't until the mid 19th century that the Springer Spaniel became recognised. As with other spaniels the Springer Spaniel was used as a retriever. The dog is a good all-rounder and has a natural ability for both retrieving and hunting.
Today there are two types of English Springer Spaniel - the show dog and the working dog. The working dog, which is smaller and more robust, is still well used. The dog delights in flushing out and retrieving both fur and feather and also loves hunting in marshland and water.
Because of their keen sense of smell and great stamina some of these dogs are used as sniffer dogs for detecting drugs. They are particularly useful for searching through large consignments at airports.
The English Springer Spaniel as a pet
The English Springer Spaniel is a companionable and friendly dog, but is probably best suited to a sporting type person who enjoys a days shoot. The dog is easy to train and requires regular grooming and plenty of exercise. |

Grooming your English Springer Spaniel
Grooming requirements: Requires regular brushing with a medium length bristle brush. These dogs also require plucking and stripping and a little scissoring of the legs and feet.
