History
The Weimaraner originated from Germany and has been in existence for at least two centuries, although there are records to show that a similar looking dog was painted by Van Eyck in the early 15th century.
The dog takes its name from the city of Weimar, which is the capital of the Land of Thuringen. It is thought that the Weimaraner was developed by cross-breeding Bloodhounds with Pointers and hunting dogs in order to produce a dog with great tracking, scenting, pointing and retrieving abilities.
The Weimaraner was introduced into Britain in the 1950's. Because of its distinctive silver grey coat the dog has been given the nickname of 'grey ghost'.
The Weimaraner as a pet
The Weimaraner is an alert, sporting dog and requires a great deal of exercise. It is very loyal and affectionate, but is not particularly suited to children. |
