History
In the mid 19th century dog fighting had become a very popular sport. Originally the Bulldog was used in the dog pits, but it proved to be too slow and clumsy, so a new, more active breed needed to be developed.
The Bulldog was cross-bred with the now extinct White English Terrier which produced a speedier more agile dog, which we know today as the Bull Terrier. The dog was developed by a Mr. James Hinks of Birmingham in the 1860's. The Bull Terrier continued to be developed by generations of the Hinks family up until the death of a Mr. Carleton Hinks in 1977.
The Bull Terrier as a pet
The Bull Terrier can make a good family pet if trained well from an early age. It is a very courageous and active dog and needs plenty of stimulation. It makes a good guard dog, but it is not good with other animals. |
