About the King Charles Spaniel |
 |
History
The King Charles Spaniel, like its cousin the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, probably originated from China or Japan.
The main difference between these two dog varieties it that the King Charles Spaniel has a larger head, lower placed ears and shorter muzzle than its close cousin.
The King Charles Spaniel was introduced into Britain in the 16th century where it became a great favourite of the royal courts, and became especially popular during the reign of Charles II, who gave the Cavalier Spaniel its name.
The King Charles Spaniel was known in America as the English Toy Spaniel.
The King Charles Spaniel was used by the nobility often as a sporting dog, but as it was further cross-bred, possibly with the Pug at some stage, it lost a lot of its sporting instincts, and today it is used more as a companion and family pet.

Grooming your King Charles Spaniel
Grooming requirements: The coat should be brushed on a daily basis with a slicker brush, followed by a brushing with a medium hard bristle brush. The feathering should be treated with care, so as not to break the hair. A finger massage is also recommended to keep the skin supple. The feathering on the ears should be brushed carefully, but regularly to stop them from becoming either knotted or matted. The outside of the ears need to be cleaned on a regular basis, and the inside of the ears should be attended to once a week by cleaning them out with a cotton wool swab dipped in alcohol, followed by a dusting with a good ear powder. The hair between the pads on the feet should be cut, and the hair around the feet should be trimmed.
Tools required: Slicker brush or bristle brush, comb and scissors
