History
The Pug is believed to have originated from China approximately 2000 years ago and is thought to have been kept by Buddhist monks.
It is thought that the Pug was introduced into Europe in the 16th century via trading ships, such as the Dutch East India Company.
The Pug was introduced into Britain during the court of William of Orange. It was a favourite with people of all walks of life, from the nobility to the working people. To many of the nobility, such as Marie Antoinette, William III and Queen Mary, it became a rather highly prized fashion accessory. Even today it is still a very popular animal.
The Pug as a pet
The Pug makes a good watchdog. It is a very adaptable animal. It is an intelligent and good-natured dog, and very good with children. It is not easy to train, due to its strong-willed character. |
