History
Because of its unknown ancestry the Beagle is generally considered as a British breed. It is thought to have been introduced into Britain by William the Conqueror. Its name is taken from the Celtic-Gaelic word 'beg', meaning small. The original Beagle often measured no more than 25cm (10ins) in height (measured to the shoulder) and was affectionately known as the 'Pocket Beagle' by hunters who would carry the dog in their saddlebags. Several royals including Elizabeth I and George IV also favoured the Beagle.
It is the smallest of our scent hounds and was used solely as a working dog until the 1940s', mainly used for hunting hares and rabbits.
The Beagle as a pet
Today the Beagle is a popular breed and makes a very good pet. With its affectionate nature and wonderful temperament the Beagle is very good with children and makes a friendly companion. |
