About the Pekingese

History
The Pekingese originated from Imperial China. It can be traced as far back as 206BC. It was originally bred exclusively for the royal courts of the Chinese Emperors, and there it became a hard working dog, performing tasks such as carrying the hem of the Emperors robes and barking to announce an Emperors arrival.

It was also nicknamed the Sleeve dog, as it was small enough to be carried inside the wide sleeves of the Emperors clothes.

In 1860 when British and French troops stormed the Emperors Summer Palace five Pekingese were captured and taken to Britain, there, one of them was presented to Queen Victoria. The animal was greatly favoured in Britain and consequently more and more were imported.

The Pekingese has now almost become extinct in its native homeland China.

The Pekingese as a pet

Grooming your Pekingese
Grooming requirements: The coat needs to be brushed on a regular basis with a medium stiff brush, starting from the chin and working back towards the hind legs. Because the coat is so long it needs to be worked in sections. Take a small section at a time lifting it up with one hand and brushing each layer back down again with the brush in the other hand, making sure to brush right down to the skin. With the legs, start from the bottom of the forelegs working up towards the neck, again taking a layer at a time. Brush out the feathering on the forelegs carefully. With the hind legs work up towards the root of the tail, then brush out the breechings. The tail feathering should be brushed out very carefully. When brushing the ears make sure there is no matting behind them, and brush out the feathering carefully. The ears should be cleaned out on a regular basis and then dusted with a good ear powder.

Tools required: Slicker brush, bristle brush, comb and scissors
