About the Pomeranian

History
The Pomeranian originated from Pomerania in Germany. It is the smallest of the spitz breeds.

It was originally a far larger dog weighing as much as 14kg and was used as a sheepdog in Germany.

It was introduced into Britain in the 1880's where it was selectively bred to eventually produce a miniature Pomeranian one tenth of its original size.

In 1883 Queen Victoria took an interest in the Pomeranian and it became a very popular dog with the royals.

The Pomeranian as a pet
The Pomeranian is a very intelligent and affectionate dog. It is very active and good with children, and it makes a loyal companion. It is also a very good watch dog. Because of its long coat it is an animal that requires daily grooming.

Grooming your Pomeranian
Grooming requirements: The coat should be brushed with a bristle brush only once a week, otherwise too much of the undercoat will be lost. When the coat moults, which is about twice a year, the old hair should be removed with a comb so as to make way for the new hair. Sometimes the ears become dry, if this should happen try applying some vaseline. Because the coat is so long it needs to be worked in sections. Take a small section at a time lifting it up with one hand and brushing each layer back down again with the brush in the other hand, making sure to brush right down to the skin. This brushing should be done as smoothly and gently as possible so that too much of the undercoat is not removed. For the sake of hygiene, with the scissors flat, trim the anal area about 2.5cm (1”) below the anus. The hair on the feet should be carefully trimmed round, but not so much as to expose the nails. With the tail, hold it up, as flat as possible, then trim up the sides to a point at the tip so that it will feather out into a fan.

Tools required: Small slicker brush, comb and scissors
