History
The Bulldog, the national dog of Great Britain, was originally developed for bull-baiting. It was able to hang on to its prey with its strong jaws without being tossed, while still managing to breath. The first dogs looked more like the Staffordshire Bull Terrier than the Bulldog of today.
The sport of bull-baiting was very popular from the sixteenth century up until 1835 when the sport was considered too cruel, and was banned.
Over the centuries the Bulldog has become a more agile and shorter-legged animal, and is still portrayed as a symbol of courage. Despite it short years of life, it is still a very popular dog today.
The Bulldog as a pet
The Bulldog, although it appears fierce, is in fact a very affectionate dog, with an excellent temperament, and often very protective towards children. Nevertheless it can be a rather obstinate animal. |
