About the Dalmatian

History
The Dalmatian is thought to have been brought by Gypsies from India to Dalmatia on the east coast of the Adriatic, but there is no proof to support this theory.

We know that the Dalmatian was used as a hunting dog during the 17th century, as there are many paintings depicting this fact throughout Europe.

The dogs were often illustrated trotting alongside horse and carriages, partly because they were considered as an attractive animal, but also because while the carriages were travelling through the countryside the Dalmatians made excellent guard dogs.

The Dalmatian was also a good rat catcher and was often kept in the stables for this purpose.

Because of its appearance the Dalmatian has been given the nickname 'Spotted Dick' or 'Plum Pudding Dog'.

The Dalmatian as a pet
These animals are very intelligent. They are a very strong and active dog and have a great temperament. They make very good guard dogs and are a loyal and affectionate companion. They require plenty of regular exercise. Unfortunately they can go deaf due to a genetic defect.
