About the Standard Poodle |
 |
History
The Poodle is thought to have originated from France. These dogs have a great affinity for water and were originally known as 'Water Dogs'.
Because of their love for water and good scenting ability they were used as gundogs to retrieve game, such as waterfowl.
As well as a sporting dog travelling Gypsies also used the Poodle for entertainment as a performing dog.
There are now three types of Poodle in existence, the Standard Poodle, the Miniature Poodle and the Toy Poodle.

Grooming your Standard Poodle
Grooming requirements: Requires regular combing. Always comb the body in an upward and outward direction. When trimming the feet comb in a downward and outward direction, trimming the hair around the foot into a slight curve. The ears need tweaking at least once a week in order to keep the ear canal free from hair. This should be done by first powdering the ear to make the hair more brittle and therefore easier to remove, and less painful to the dog, this is best done with artery forceps. When clipping the face, remember that this is a sensitive area and always clip against the growth of hair.
The tail should also be clipped against the growth of hair. When trimming the legs always start at the bottom, near the foot, and work upwards.
Tools required:
Slicker brush, comb and scissors
