History
The Border Collie originated from the border between Scotland and England, hence the name.
Because of its 'strong eye' and great stamina and agility the Border Collie was developed for herding sheep.
Still used for this purpose today, the Border Collie is capable of doing the work of several men and uses its menacing stare to hold the sheep in place, and its great speed and stamina to herd the sheep together. It often covers ground of about 40-50 miles a day.
The Border Collie was one of the first Collies to win at the Sheepdog Trials. It has very strong herding instincts and a great loyalty and devotion to duty. This dog is never happier than whilst carrying out its job in the fields.
The Border Collie as a pet
Because the Border Collie has such high energy levels and a strong herding instinct it is not really suitable as a pet. It requires careful handling and a great deal of freedom to roam. |

Grooming your Border Collie
Grooming requirements: Regular combing and brushing should be carried out. Extra care should be taken when the dense, soft undercoat is shedding. Check regularly for ticks on coat and behind ears. Because these dogs are generally used as working dogs, it is not necessary to give the coat too much attention.
Tools required:
Slicker brush, nylon or bristle brush, shedder, comb.
