About the Bloodhound

History
The Bloodhound is the largest of the scent hounds and one of the oldest breeds in the world. The Bloodhound can be traced back as far as AD687, when it is said to have been used for hunting deer in the Ardennes in Belgium. The first Bloodhounds in Britain were thought to have been used around the time of the Norman Conquest.

The Bloodhound has a unique nose and an exceptional ability for tracking human beings. Because of this amazing ability the Bloodhound is ideally suited for tracking down escape criminals and is still used today by many prison authorities.

The Bloodhound as a pet
Bloodhounds are a very dignified and affectionate breed. They are very good in the company of other dogs and also in the company of children. Because of their dependable and sensitive nature Bloodhounds make a lovely pet.

Grooming your Bloodhound
Grooming requirements: skin should be thin and extremely loose. A bristle brush should be used on the coat, followed by a hand massage in order to keep the skin supple. When the coat appears dry spray some oil onto a brush, and brush it into the coat to give it a good sheen. The inside of the ears need daily dusting with a good ear powder.

Tools required: Medium size bristle brush, hound glove, shedder
