About the Boxer

History
The Boxer originated from Germany. It can be traced back as far as the end of the 19th century.

It is believed that the Boxer may be a descendent of the Bullenbeisser which is a close relation to the Mastiff. Because of its strong jaws and muscular physique it was originally developed for boar hunting, and bear and bull-baiting. It was also used on the farms as a cattle dog.

In its later stages of evolution it is thought that the Boxer was also cross-bred with the English Bulldog.

In recent times the Boxer has been successfully trained as a police dog and a guide dog, both in Germany and in Britain.

The Boxer as a pet
The Boxer makes an excellent guard dog. It is also a very energetic animal and requires plenty of exercise. It enjoys human companionship and is very gentle with children. Unfortunately it is susceptible to a number of ailments, particularly rheumatism and cancer of the skin. It also has a tendency to slobber a lot.

Grooming your Boxer
Grooming requirements: This dog is very easy to groom. Brushing should be carried out daily with a soft, short-bristled brush. To keep the skin smooth and supple carry out a regular finger massage, followed by a polish with a velvet pad. A good hand strapping is also useful for bringing out a sheen on the coat.

Tools required: Hound glove, bristle brush, shedder
