History
The Boxer originated from Germany. It can be traced back as far as the end of the 19th century.
It is believed that the Boxer may be a descendent of the Bullenbeisser which is a close relation to the Mastiff. Because of its strong jaws and muscular physique it was originally developed for boar hunting, and bear and bull-baiting. It was also used on the farms as a cattle dog.
In its later stages of evolution it is thought that the Boxer was also cross-bred with the English Bulldog.
In recent times the Boxer has been successfully trained as a police dog and a guide dog, both in Germany and in Britain.
The Boxer as a pet

Unfortunately it is susceptible to a number of ailments, particularly rheumatism and cancer of the skin. It also has a tendency to slobber a lot. |

Grooming your Boxer

To keep the skin smooth and supple carry out a regular finger massage, followed by a polish with a velvet pad. A good hand strapping is also useful for bringing out a sheen on the coat.
