About the Rough or Smooth coated Collie |
 |
History
The Collie is thought to have been introduced into Britain by the Romans, where it was bred mainly as a working dog, in Scotland and Ireland, and used for herding sheep and cattle.
Over the years the image of the Rough Collie has changed. It is believed that the Collie was interbred with the Newfoundland, Deerhound and Russian Borzoi to create a much more glamorous looking dog.
The Collie soon became a favourite of royalty including Queen Victoria and Queen Alexandra and in 1860 it achieved great fame as a show-dog.
The Smooth-coated Collie has also been made popular through its role in the film'Lassie' in 1943.
The Smooth coated and Rough coated Collies are identical apart from their obvious difference in coat length.

Grooming your Rough or Smooth coated Collie
Grooming requirements:
Rough Collie: Regular brushing should be carried out, at least once every two days with a long-bristled brush with a handle. Start at the extremities by holding the hair up with one hand while brushing it down with the brush in the other hand. Always be careful when brushing the undercoat, making sure not to remove too much hair. Don’t forget to brush behind the ears, otherwise they will ball and felt. When brushing the feathering on the legs always brush in the direction in which it grows.
Tools required:
Long bristle brush, slicker brush, shedder, comb and scissors
Smooth Collie: Brushing should be carried out once or twice a week with a rubber mounted bristle brush. A finger massage should also be carried out once a week to keep the skin smooth and supple.
Tools required:
Slicker brush, nylon or bristle brush, shedder, comb and scissors.
