History
The Doberman originated from Germany. A breeder and tax collector called Herr Louis Doberman who wanted a medium sized watch dog to protect him on his rounds from non-too willing tax payers bred the dog.
Herr Louis Doberman is believed to have developed the dog by inter-breeding the Rottweiler, the Weimaraners, the Manchester Terrier and the Pinscher.
In 1890 a German by the name of Herr Otto Goeller developed the dog further and added Pinscher to the name Doberman. The dog is known by the name Doberman Pinscher in America and in continental Europe. In Britain we know it simply as the Doberman.
The Doberman was not introduced into Britain until 1947. It is probably now known as one of the best guard dogs in the world and is used as such by many police forces and security firms. It also has strong scenting powers and makes a very good tracker dog.
The Doberman as a pet
The Doberman is an intelligent animal. It is very loyal and obedient and makes a devoted companion if trained from an early age. |

Grooming your Doberman

A good hand strapping is also recommended to bring out the glossy coat, finishing with a hound glove to give the coat a gleam. The ears need to be dusted once a week with a good ear powder.
