About the German Shepherd Dog

History
The German Shepherd was used originally for herding sheep and as a guard dog. They were used this way for many centuries.

In 1899 a German cavalry officer purchased a German Shepherd and realised that its use as a sheep dog was on the decline, but that with special training it could be developed for other roles.

In the First World War the German Shepherd was used for carrying messages and for sentry and guard duty. It was also used for laying cables, and was nicknamed the 'Wire Dog'.

By the Second World War the dog had become more widely known and was used in Europe, the Mediterranean and the Pacific for detecting mines, tracking, and sentry and guard duty.

Today the German Shepherd is often used by the police force for crowd control and for detecting drugs. It is also used as a successful rescue dog. It is now considered as one of the most popular and versatile dogs in the world.

Grooming your German Shepherd Dog
Grooming requirements: Daily grooming should be carried out with a short-bristle brush. A comb should only be used when the dog is moulting, otherwise too much of the undercoat will be pulled out. A finger massage should also be carried out once a week to keep the skin supple. A spirit dressing needs to be rubbed well into the coat to keep it clean. A hand strapping is recommended to give the coat a good bloom.

Tools required: Slicker brush, bristle brush, comb (to be used only when dog is moulting) and scissors.
