History
The original Great Dane is believed to have originated from Germany, and is thought to have been brought into Europe by Russian tribes.
The Germans refer to the dog as the 'Deutsche Dogge' (German Hound).
During the Middle Ages the Great Dane was popular with the nobility. It was a much more muscular dog then, and was used for hunting wild boar and stag.
Today the Great Dane has been developed into a far more refined and graceful animal.
The Great Dane as a pet
The Great Dane is a very affectionate animal and makes a great companion. It is very good with children and has a very friendly and outgoing character. If trained at an early age it can be very obedient and make a good guard dog. |

Grooming your Great Dane
Grooming requirements: Brushing should be carried out on a regular basis with a soft brush, followed by a good finger massage to keep the skin supple. A hand strapping is also recommended to bring up the sheen on the coat. The ears should be cleaned out on a weekly basis using a cotton wool swab dipped in alcohol held with a pair of artery forceps. The ears should then be dusted with a good ear powder.
Tools required:
Hound glove, soft bristle brush, shedder.
