History
The St. Bernard originated from Switzerland. Its name is derived from the St. Bernard Hospice where it was bred.
The dog is a direct descendent of the Alphine Mastiff which was used by the monks as a pathfinder and watchdog in the Swiss Alps.
The St. Bernard was originally a smaller and smoother-coated animal. It was discovered that the dog had an instinctive talent for rescue work, and was greatly used for searching and tracking down victims lost in the snow. It would often have a cask fastened around its neck containing liquid refreshment or food and clothing for the rescued travellers.
Today the dog is far more popular in America than in its original European homeland.
The St. Bernard as a pet
The St. Bernard is an intelligent and friendly animal. It is a very loyal and trustworthy companion. It is especially gentle with children and requires regular, but short walks. |
