About the Shar-Pei

History
The word Shar-Pei is Chinese for ‘sand-skin’ or ‘shark-skin’. This animal is believed to have originated from Kwun Tung in China, but it can be traced as far back as the Han Dynasty (206bc). It is believed to have shared its origins with the smooth coated Chow Chow, possibly because it is the only other dog in existence that shares the same blue-black mouth and tongue as the Shar-Pei

The Shar Pei was originally used on Chinese farms to carry out such tasks as cattle herding and guarding the family home. Later the Shar-Pei was bred as a fighting dog. Because of its loose skin and prickly coat its opponents found the dog very difficult to grab hold of.

During the Communist Revolution in China the dog population was virtually wiped out, if it was not for the efforts of a Hong Kong businessman named Matgo Law who appealed to the United States to have a few specimens of Shar-Pei transported to them, the breed would not be in existence today. The first Shar-Peis were registered in 1976, and now the breed is so popular that America and Canada combined boast over 100,000 Shar-Pei.

The Shar-Pei as a pet
These dogs make a good family pet, but they need a handler with a firm and confident touch, otherwise the dog will become disobedient and difficult to train. Shar-Pei are very clean dogs and are very easy to house train. They need plenty of exercise, but do not expose them to too much sunshine, as they are very sensitive to it.

Grooming your Shar-Pei
The coat requires regular brushing. The dogs coat does not need trimming, but it will shed hair from time to time. When shedding occurs the dog should be bathed once a week and the coat should be brushed on a daily basis to remove the old dead hair and allow the new coat to grow in.

Tools required: Medium sized bristle brush, shedder, hound glove.
