About the Lhasa Apso

History
The Lhasa Apso originates from the ancient monasteries of Tibet. It can be traced back to the 13th century where it was used as a chamber guard. This animal is probably a descendent of the long-coated herding dogs of Asia.

The word Lhasa Apso has a two-part meaning. The word ‘Lhasa’ is thought to be associated with the capital of Tibet. Whereas the word ‘Apso’ means ‘goatlike’, possibly referring to its long flowing coat which is said to resemble the beard of a goat.

The Lhasa Apso is believed to bring good luck and is also alleged to have a religious significance. It is said that the Buddhist beliefs associated the dog with reincarnation. It is also considered as a great honour, in their homeland, to be presented with one as a gift.

The Lhasa Apso as a pet
This animal makes a good companion and loyal family pet. It is very intelligent and friendly and is very good with children. It socialises well with other family pets, but tends to be a little cautious with strangers. It makes an excellent guard dog.

Grooming your Lhasa Apso
Grooming requirements: The coat requires careful grooming on a weekly basis, using a comb and brush, to prevent matting. These dogs can be hard to keep clean and tidy. The coat requires trimming about 2½ cm all over, except for the back, tail, leg feathering on the hind legs, and the feathering on the ears. The ear feathering can be cut straight across like a square fringe.

Tools required: Slicker brush, medium size stiff bristle brush, comb for feathering and scissors
