About the Mastiff

History
The Mastiff is believed to have originated from Assyria. A broad muzzled type Mastiff can be traced back as far as 700BC.

Along with the St. Bernard, the Mastiff is one of the oldest and heaviest of the British breeds in existence.

In the first century A.D. the Romans transported from Britain a similar type of heavily built dog and used it for pit-fighting. Later on, the Mastiff was used in Britain as a watchdog. It was used mainly by the farmers to protect their livestock and other property from various predators.

Today, as with many of the larger breeds, the Mastiff is more widely used in the States than in Britain.

Grooming your Mastiff
Grooming is very straightforward with this breed. They need grooming daily with a hound glove, followed by a finger massage and a good hand strapping When moulting, their coats require regular raking out with a fine tooth comb. Their ears need to be cleaned out with a cotton wool swab moistened in alcohol, then dusted with a good ear powder. The loose skin on the face needs to be powdered and kept dry. The eyes should be wiped round with a good eye lotion. The mouth, especially the flews, need to be cleaned after meals.

Tools required: Hound glove, shedder, fine tooth comb.
