Today in its native country the Japanese Akita can be relied upon as a trusty police or guard dog. A symbol of good health it is held in the highest esteem as the national dog. When a child is born or a friend falls ill an Akita statue is gifted as a token of health and happiness. The Akita was first introduced into the United States in 1937 by the author, Helen Keller and is continuing to increase in popularity.
