About the Rhodesian Ridgeback

History
The Rhodesian Ridgeback has been in existence for hundreds of years and originated in South Africa. They were originally used to protect herds and flocks from various predators.

When European settlers arrived in Africa the dog was cross-bred with other hounds such as the Greyhound and Bloodhound. It became known as the African Lion-Dog because of its use as a big game hunter, tracking down lions, taunting them and driving them towards the hunter so that they could be shot. Some settlers transported the Rhodesian Ridgeback into Rhodesia. There it was used for much the same purpose. These dogs have also been known to be used to flush out smaller game, such as rabbits.

Because of their speed some Rhodesian Ridgebacks are today used as racing dogs on the Greyhound circuits, they have been found to be equally as fast, if not faster, in some cases than the Greyhounds.

Rhodesian Ridgebacks can be easily distinguished from other similar dogs by their distinctive ridge of hair that runs along the top of the spine in the opposite direction to the rest of the coat.

The Rhodesian Ridgeback as a pet
The Rhodesian Ridgeback is considered as a dignified and powerful animal, although it is not at all aggressive. It makes a good guard dog and faithful companion, but it is not good with children or other dogs
