About the Afghan Hound

History
A member of the greyhound family, the Afghan Hound first made its appearance in countries bordering the eastern Mediterranean. Because of its speed and sharp vision it was bred as a hunting dog, and was well used for this purpose by the Afghanistan royal family. The Afghan Hound was not discovered in Europe until the late 1800's, and did not reach Britain until the early twentieth century.

Today the Afghan Hound is considered as a true aristocrat, portraying both elegance and dignity. It is often used as a racing dog, and because of its long, fine textured coat it requires a great deal of grooming, preferably about three times a week.

The Afghan Hound as a pet
Afghan pets need a great deal of exercise. They have a strong independent nature and can be difficult to train, but if given all the right care and attention your Afghan Hound will make a very loyal and affectionate companion.

Grooming your Afghan Hound
Constant grooming is required, as least three times a week. The coat should be groomed from the extremities working in an upward direction. Because the coat is so long it needs to be worked in section. This is done by holding up a small section at a time with one hand, while brushing it down again with the brush in the other hand. Any fuzz on the cheeks needs to be removed and the feathering on the tail needs to be regularly trimmed. The hair between the pads on the feet should also be trimmed on a regular basis. The ears should be cleaned out with a cotton wool swab, followed by a dusting with a good ear powder.

Tools required Long bristle brush essential, slicker, wide-tooth comb, blunt ended scissors for mats.
