History
The Basset Hound was first mentioned in the mid 16th century in France. The word 'basset' means dwarf in French. Because of its keen sense of smell, its ability to pick up a scent, and its patience and stamina the Basset Hound was used as a hunting dog, mainly for trailing rabbits, hares and deer. It works best when hunting in a pack and is enormously keen on the outdoor life.
The Basset Hound was first introduced into Britain in 1866 where it was cross-bred with the British Bloodhound which created the well-known British Basset Hound
The Basset Hound as a pet
These dogs make great pets. They can sometimes be a little stubborn and lazy; therefore to avoid them becoming overweight they require plenty of regular exercise, which they thoroughly enjoy. They are very affectionate and easygoing and are very good with children. |
