History
The Cairn Terrier originates from the Isle of Skye in Scotland. It is thought to be the oldest of the Terrier breeds north of the border. The dog was originally known as the Short-haired-Skye Terrier, but this became too easily confused with the Skye Terrier, from the same region.
With its tough waterproof coat and its ability to move over rocks and wriggle through small crevices the Cairn Terrier was ideally suited to tracking down vermin, such as foxes, badgers and otters which were rife in the Scottish highlands.
The Cairn Terrier as a pet
The Cairn Terrier is a fearless little dog and makes an excellent guard dog. It is very good with children and easy to train. It is a very active and devoted animal and makes an excellent pet and companion. |
