History
There are two types of Welsh Corgi, the Cardigan and the Pembroke, although the two separate varieties were not recognised until 1934.
The Welsh Corgi was originally bred as a cattle dog, used for fetching and driving cattle and sheep, and also ponies from the pasture. In addition, it was used by the drovers at the docks to help unload the cattle.
The Pembroke, due to its connections with the royal family, is a far more popular dog. It is the smaller of the two breeds and is usually seen with its tail docked.
The Cardigan is a larger and heavier dog than the Pembroke and has a tail much like that of a foxes. It is believed to be the older of the two breeds.
Today the Pembroke is a heavier and less agile dog than the original breed.
The Welsh Corgi as a pet
The Welsh Corgi makes an ideal pet. It is a very alert little dog and makes a good guard dog. It is not particularly good with other dogs and it does not get on well with children. It is also not easy to train. |

Grooming your Welsh Corgi
Grooming requirements for both varieties: The coat should be brushed daily with a medium stiff bristle brush. It should also be combed through once a week with a medium fine comb. A finger massage is also recommended once a week to keep the skin supple, followed by a good hand strapping to keep the coat looking good.
Tools required:
Slicker brush, bristle brush and medium fine comb.
