History
Although ancient Egyptian sculptures and Mexican carvings show a similar looking short-legged dog to the Dachshund, its ancestry is not really known. It is thought to have originated from Germany.
The Dachshund was first introduced into Britain in the mid 19th century by Queen Victoria's husband.
The word 'Dachshund' means 'badger dog', and the animal was used in the forests of Germany as a hunting dog to track down both badgers and foxes, although at that time the Dachshund was a larger and more hound-like animal.
Today six varieties of the Dachshund exist - Three standard types: long-haired, smooth-haired and wire-haired and three corresponding miniatures.
The Dachshund as a pet
If you would like a Dachshund as a pet you must take into consideration that the long-haired variety will need regular grooming and that Dachshunds in general are very independent and can be rather disobedient, although they do have great characters and are very intelligent. Dachshunds are not really an ideal pet for a young family.
