History
The Bullmastiff is a very heavy breed, often weighing as much as 130lbs. It is the only breed of watchdog that was specifically created in Britain by crossing the English Mastiff with the Bulldog in the ratio of 60/40. It became recognised by the British Kennel Club in 1924. Some time further back in history it is known that similar dogs were used by gamekeepers hoping to ward off poachers.
The Bullmastiff as a pet
These dogs will rarely bite, unless they have specifically been trained to do so from an early age. Bullmastiffs are very good with children. Their have a calm and easy going nature which seems to help them tolerate the energy of younger children. But because of their size constant supervision is required.
The Bullmastiff is a naturally protective dog. It is very suspicious of strangers and makes a very good guard dog. Bullmastiffs seem to possess the ability to sense people's intentions - they seem to be able to sense the difference between someone intent on causing you harm, and a innocent visitor calling at your property.
Bullmastiffs do not like extreme heat or extreme cold. They do not need a great deal of exercise, one longish walk a day should be quite sufficient exercise for them.

Grooming your Bullmastiff
Bullmastiffs are a short-haired dog which have minimal shedding. Grooming should be carried out once a week using a medium sized slicker brush, followed by a rub down with a rubber hound glove and a velvet pad which will bring up a fine polish. A good finger massage keeps the skin supple and a hand strapping is excellent for the coat.
Regular attention should be given to the ears, teeth and nails. Try cleaning the teeth using an enzymatic toothpaste.
Tools required: Shedder, slicker brush, hound glove.
