About the Samoyed

History
The Samoyed belongs to one of the Spitz group and has a coat typical of this group. It derives its name from a nomadic people living in central Asia. These people held it in great esteem using it as a shepherd for herding their reindeer near and within the Artic circle. It was also used for pulling sledges and guarding the tents.

The name Samoyed is believed to have originated from a district bearing this name in the far north.

Because of its reputation for longevity and its seemingly endless energy and hardyness the Samoyed is often used by Arctic explorers as a companion on their polar expeditions.

A unique feature of this dog is its smiling expression.

The Samoyed as a pet
The Samoyed is a very affectionate animal, and very fond of humans. Training can be a problem unless you are a very experienced handler with a great deal of patience. These dogs require a lot of exercise and plenty of grooming.

Grooming your Samoyed
The coat requires daily grooming. Fortunately with this breed of dog there is practically no trimming required, only the hair between the feet should be removed when necessary. Combing is required to the fringes on the forelegs and behind the ears only. Regular attention should be given to the ears, teeth and nails. The nails require clipping about once a month. The teeth should be cleaned when necessary. The ears need to be dusted with a good ear powder on a weekly basis. It may also be necessary to ocassionally dust the ear with flea powder.

Tools required: Shedder, slicker, brush with long bristles, wide tooth comb, scissors
