History
The origin of the Whippet is not certain. It is thought to have either been cross-bred with Italian Greyhounds and Terriers, or Pharaoh Hounds and Maltese Rabbit Dogs.
The Whippet was originally used for hare and rabbit coursing. When rabbit coursing was banned for its cruelty the Whippet was then used as a racing dog. This sport became very popular and was well suited to the Whippet which can reach speeds of up to 40mph.
The first Whippet racing tracks were opened in Lancashire. These tracks were covered in either grass or cinder, although the cinder tracks became more commonly used as it was found that the dogs achieved a faster time on this surface.
The Whippet as a pet
The Whippet makes an ideal pet. It is very affectionate and good natured; it is also very good with children and other pets. The animal is easy to train and very adaptable. |
